Paris Saint-Germain forward, Lionel Messi, has called on France Football, the organizers of the Ballon d’Or award, to give Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski the prize for last year.
The ceremony was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, it was widely acknowledged that Lewandowski would have taken home the plaque.
On the award’s return this year, Lewandowski could only finish in second place behind Messi.
During his acceptance speech, Messi said: “I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it’s been a real honour to compete with you.
“Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year.
“I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or – you deserve it and you should have it at home.”
