A civil society group, United Youth for Growth and Development (UYGD) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint the next Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) from the southern part of Nigeria.

Making their opinion known, the group in a press conference held in Osogbo hinted that since the establishment of the FCC in 1996, there have been five chairmen with none coming from Southern Nigeria.

Speaking on the groups’ behalf, the Executive Director of UYGD, Comrade Wasiu Adebiyi noted that despite several petitions and calls against the appointment of the current Chairman, Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankara who is from the North Central, the Senate had swept the petitions under the carpet without giving it any consideration.

Stating the reason for their rejection of the Secretary position for the Southern part of Nigeria, Adebiyi said it was because, “The Secretary of the commission is the head of the Commission Secretariat, administration, direction and control of all employees but subject to the approval of the Chairman.

“The occupant is neither a member of the Commission nor a decision or policymaker in the body. Each state of the federation is involved in the policymaking through their representation, hence no state or geo-political zone of the country is marginalised.

He stressed that the Commission is structured along a parliamentary line and decisions are reached in a collegial environment.

While responding to questions, Adebiyi revealed that President Buhari is keen on appointing a person from Southern Nigeria to the position of FCC Chairman but some interests were working against this proposed decision.

He challenged the president to use his discretionary powers to appoint a Chairman from the South.

DAILY POST also gathered that the group is against the earlier held press briefing where it advocated that the position of the FCC Secretary come to the South.

According to it, “It is, therefore, germane to point out that the southern part of the country is not interested in the secretary position but the Chairmanship whenever the vacancy occurs.

DAILY POST recalls that the FCC was established by section 153 (1) (C) of the 1999 Constitution to guaranteeing the operation and implementation of the principles of federal character.
